Our Summer Term topic is 'Our World'
English
At the start of Summer 1, we will be completing a short poetry unit based around 'Jinnie Ghost' by Jane Ray and Berlie Doherty. This will allow us to use a range of descriptive language techniques to create effective imagery and experiment with different poetry forms.
After this, we will be moving on to 'The Paperbag Prince' by Colin Thompson. This tells the story of a once-beautiful environment that has now been destroyed by the mounds of rubbish being dumped there every day. In our lessons, we will be revising skills such as parenthesis and how to create cohesion within a paragraph and learning about modal verbs. We will then be applying our knowledge to a piece of persuasive writing about landfill sites.
In Reading, we begin by looking at an extract from 'The Last Wild' by Piers Torday. We will then be reading a non-fiction text called 'Pollution: A Look Behind the Scenes' by The Literacy Company. Here, we will be drawing inferences and justifying our ideas with evidence, and considering how presentation, language and structural devices are used in non-fiction texts.
