What is PSHE Education?
PSHE Education (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to successfully manage their lives – now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE Education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.

Intent

We want pupils at Wistaston Church Lane Academy to have enough knowledge so they know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way. We aim to ensure pupils are given the knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. We believe that when taught well, PSHE education helps pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.

Due to the demographic of WCLA, and our below national average ethnic minorities pupils on roll, it is important that we build upon the children’s experiences to provide a wider understanding of the diversity in our country, and across the world, as a whole in terms of race, religion, relationships.  The intent is to develop tolerant, respectful and compassionate young people, prepared for their future lives in the wider world. 

The Jigsaw curriculum holds children at its heart and its cohesive vision helps children understand and value how they fit into and contribute to the world. It has a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, builiding resilience and nutruing mental and physical health.

Implementation

We follow the Jigsaw scheme of learning as part of our PSHE offer. Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (known as puzzles), each containing six lessons (referred to as the 'pieces') covering each academic year. 

Term 1: Being Me in My World

Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

Term 3: Dreams and Goals

Term 4: Healthy Me

Term 5: Relationships

Term 6: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

Session are planned, resourced and delivered whilst being mindful of a variety of learning styles including creative and visual approaches to allow accessibility and adaptability for all learners. Medium-term plans for each year group, are carefully structured to adapt the sessions to the areas of need for the pupils at our school, as well as ensuring curriculum coverage. 

No Outsiders

We use the No Outsiders scheme of work to strengthen our ethos that nobody should be left out and everybody can be included. We look further into equality and diversity during these sessions.

Impact

At Wistaston Church Lane Academy it is expected that all PSHE lessons are engaging and that all learning is inclusive to ensure children achieve the learning focus.

• Children who will understand the physical and emotional aspects involved in RSE at an age-appropriate level.
• Children who will have respect for themselves and others.
• Children who will have positive body images.
• Children who will know how to keep themselves safe: physically, mentally and technologically.
• Children who will understand that the world is diverse and that everyone has the right to equality.
• Children who will be able to articulate themselves clearly using age-appropriate language surrounding the key themes of PSHE.
• Children who will have the building blocks necessary to continue to learn and develop after they leave Wistaston Church Lane Academy.
