Art and Design

Intent 

At WCLA we aim for children to embrace their artistic flare! 

We want children to celebrate their skills by providing them with numerous opportunities to learn what they are and how they can develop them. Children are exposed to art and design from EYFS right up to year 6 and throughout this time they continue to build upon previously taught skills and techniques. 

We aim for children to be immersed in and enthusiastic about art by celebrating their artwork and inspiring them through high quality teaching and delivery of the curriculum, as well as displaying their masterpieces around school. 

Implementation

At Wistaston Church Lane Academy, we follow the Access Art Scheme, with units of work being taught through three pathways of skill. The main areas for teaching are Drawing & Sketchbooks, Surface & Colour and Working in Three Dimensions. Varying skills are taught through these pathways each year to ensure children have chance to keep building upon these and embedding them. 

Each pathway includes: 

• A lesson where children will find out about new artists and the techniques and processes they use. 
• Evidence of new skills being taught (from curriculum overview). 
• Opportunity to explore and take ownership of their own sketchbook.  
• Chance to celebrate and share their work and discuss their intentions and outcomes.  

Each pathway also offers teachers opportunities to delve deeper or choose an alternative task to suit the needs of their class.  

Evidence of children evaluating their work throughout and acknowledging what worked well and what they will continue to develop upon. 

Art is clearly evident around school from whole school 3D projects, to paintings on the walls in libraries. Individual and class pieces of art work are also celebrated in high quality displays in classrooms and around school. 

Impact 

A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. 

Children’s evaluations should reflect their growing confidence and understanding of techniques and vocabulary. They should begin to have a sense of independence and understand and utilise their artistic strengths. 

Through high quality teaching we ensure that all children are able to: 

• Feel inspired by the work of others and excited to develop their skills.
• Develop their capacity for imaginative and original thought through experimentation. 
• Develop their abilities to articulate and communicate ideas, options and feelings about their own work and that of others. 
• Experience an abundance of opportunities to explore and experiment with different skills and techniques. 
• Learn about artists, designers and architects and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
• Achieve well in Art which is reflected through a consistent learning journey and clear progress. 
• Effectively evaluate their own learning and from this see progression throughout their sketchbooks.
