At WCLA, we are proud to offer a forward-thinking curriculum that develops the whole child. Rooted in our core values, our curriculum nurtures every aspect of our pupils’ development — emotional, physical, academic, social, moral, spiritual, and cultural — within an inclusive and inspiring learning environment.
We have recently reimagined our school timetable to give greater parity between core and foundation subjects, ensuring that all areas of the curriculum receive the attention they deserve. A highlight of this innovation is our weekly Foundation Day, where children immerse themselves in rich, extended learning experiences across subjects such as science, history, geography, the arts, and design & technology. This approach has led to greater depth, creativity, and enjoyment in learning, and reflects our belief that a broad and balanced curriculum is essential for long-term success. Examples of our timetables can be located at the bottom of the page.
Our curriculum remains fully aligned with the National Curriculum and prepares pupils for life in modern Britain, while extending beyond statutory content to build essential skills for the future. Subject leaders have carefully mapped progression in knowledge, skills, and vocabulary to ensure that learning is connected, meaningful, and sequenced for maximum impact.
We place great value on cognitive principles such as interleaving, retrieval practice, and spaced repetition, which are embedded into our teaching of core subjects. By structuring English and maths in shorter, yet more frequent sessions across the week, we support knowledge retention and keep pupils engaged. Lessons are deliberately paced to maximise attention and reduce overload — helping pupils develop mastery over time.
Our ultimate aim is to create confident, curious learners who make a positive contribution to their community and society. We want every child to leave WCLA equipped not only with academic success, but with the resilience, independence, and critical thinking skills they need to thrive in secondary school and beyond.
To enrich our curriculum further, we offer a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities and educational visits, including residentials from Year 2 to Year 6, where pupils build self-management, teamwork, communication, and leadership skills through hands-on experiences.
The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils — along with a strong grounding in British values — is woven throughout our curriculum. Our PSHE programme ensures that children understand themselves and others, develop emotional literacy, and make safe, informed choices.
When children leave WCLA at the end of Year 6, they do so with a strong sense of identity, a love of learning, and the ability to navigate challenges. They are ready not just for the next stage of education, but for life.
